To answer frequently asked questions, here is a short memo on data formats and specifications document availability established thanks to Norrie Wrightthe basic point to access all this is the ESAC DPGS node where you will findthe Standard data specifications –> ftp://131.176.251.166/smos/Operational_Documentation/Technical_Notes/ Note that the most up to date documents are (as of 20/4/2010)for level 0 –> SO-TN-IDR-GS-0003 L0 Spec v3.5 2010-02-02.pdffor level 1 –> SO-TN-IDR-GS-0005 L1 Spec v5.14 2010-02-10_track_changes.pdfFor Level 2 –>SO-TN-IDR-GS-0006 L2 Spec v4.9 2010-04-06.pdfand for near real time –> SO-ID-DMS-GS-0002 – NRT Product Format v2_6.pdf If you want to look at the data ESA had a number of tools developped they are located – with related documentation at –>  ftp://131.176.251.166/smos/software/You may also want to use the BEAM SMOS Tool box available from Brockman Consult (http://www.brockmann-consult.de/beam-wiki/display/SBOX/SMOS+Toolbox+for+BEAM) or ESA ESRIN, not to mention the now famous Orbit tool ESOV -NG (the SMOS orbit file was given in this blog earlier) also available from ESAMichele Zundo also indicates that if you want to really go into the data and make your own algorithms there is a C++ library to allow read/write fields from the SMOS products available on ftp://131.176.251.166/smos/software/XML_RW_APIIt needs to be used together with Products schemas also located at ftp://131.176.251.166/smos/schemasFinally a “matlab” read tool was developed by Array Systems and can be obtained from  Ali Mahmoodi at Array –> ali@array.ca it simplifies readuing data to use in Matlab codeEnjoy!

  1. Hi Yann & all,the linkftp://anonymous@193.146.123.163/smos/schemasproduces a timeout. Is there an updated link or any other location which we could use to automatically get the newest schemas for the RW-API?Thanks & greetings from Munich,Johanna

  2. Hi Johanna\n\nThe updated link is the following:\nftp://anonymous@131.176.251.166/smos/schemas/\n\nThanks for your comment

  3. The updated link is timing out for me – do you have a working link where I can find the software?ThanksMalcolm

  4. Dear Malcolm\n\nAll the links had not been updated (only in the comments), sorry about that.\nI just updated all the links in the page, they should be working just fine for you now.\n\nThanks for following the SmosBlog\n\nRegards.

  5. I’m afraid that the update links still don’t work for me. Are there restrictions on where these links can be accessed from? How do I get hold of a copy of this XM_RW_API software?TIAMalcolm
