Adriaan Van de Griend received his Ph.D. (cum laude) in 1981 from the Vrije Universiteit on Alpine Hydrology and Atmospheric Circulation Systems. He is now a senior lecturer in hydrology and remote sensing in the Faculty of Earth Sciences (Department of Hydrology). Since 1982 he has been involved in a long-standing cooperation with NASA/GSFC (Dr. Edwin T. Engman and Dr. Manfred Owe) on passive microwave remote sensing for surface moisture monitoring and received a scholarship from the Netherlands Organization for Pure Scientific Research (ZWO) in 1983 and a scholarship from the US National Academy of Sciences (1985). He was project leader of the Botswana Water and Surface Energy Balance Research Program (Vrije Universiteit - NASA/GSFC), coordinator of the EC-funded project FOREST-DYNAMO (FOREST environmental DYNAmics MOnitoring by microwave remote sensing) and is member of the IGBP/NOPEX-Executive Committee (responsible for remote sensing activities) and project manager of several projects (e.g. RESYSMED, WINTEX) in which the department participates. His research interest is mainly in passive microwave remote sensing with emphasis on the interpretation of long-term signatures gathered from space by Nimbus/SMMR and SSM/I.
