Michel Fily (43) is in charge of remote sensing at the Laboratoire de Glaciologie et Geophysique de l'Environnement de Grenoble. His field of research is remote sensing of ice and snow with a particular interest on polar ice sheets. He is involved in passive microwave remote sensing through the interpretation of satellite data (SMMR, SSMI), field experiments in the Alps and development of emission models. He is invoved in fields experiments in Antarctica as french coordinator of the International TransAntarctic Scientific Experiment.

Role in the SMOS mission:

SMOS data will be used at LGGE for studies of the physical snow characteristics over the Antarctic ice sheet. Those characteristics will be linked to climatic important parameters such as the snow accumulation rate. Michel Fily will also coordinate the Dome C Calibration campaigns.
